22. German language A1: Official Time (Offizielle Zeit)

When learning German, you will quickly notice that Germans often use the 24-hour system (offizielle Zeit) instead of the 12-hour system (inoffizielle Zeit). This is especially true for:

Useful Vocabulary about Time ⏰

How to Ask for the Time

In German, the two most common questions are:

Wie spät ist es? → What time is it?
Wie viel Uhr ist es? → What is the time?

Reading the Official Time (24-hour clock)

Full Hours

1:00 → Es ist ein Uhr. (It is one o’clock.)
2:00 → Es ist zwei Uhr.
6:00 → Es ist sechs Uhr.
12:00 → Es ist zwölf Uhr.
13:00 → Es ist dreizehn Uhr.
15:00 → Es ist fünfzehn Uhr.
20:00 → Es ist zwanzig Uhr.
23:00 → Es ist dreiundzwanzig Uhr.
00:00 → Es ist null Uhr. (midnight / 12 am)

💡 Notice: In official time, after 12:00, you continue counting: 13:00, 14:00, 15:00 … up to 23:00.

Hours + Minutes

Simply add the minutes after the hour:

01:05 → Es ist ein Uhr fünf. (It is 1:05.)
01:15 → Es ist ein Uhr fünfzehn. (It is 1:15.)
01:30 → Es ist ein Uhr dreißig. (It is 1:30.)
01:45 → Es ist ein Uhr fünfundvierzig. (It is 1:45.)
01:55 → Es ist ein Uhr fünfundfünfzig. (It is 1:55.)
13:15 → Es ist dreizehn Uhr fünfzehn. (It is 1:15 pm / 13:15.)

1. Official vs. Inofficial Time

Offizielle Zeit (24-hour clock):
- Used in timetables, train stations, airports, offices, hospitals, TV programs, etc.
- Example: Der Zug fährt um 18:45 Uhr ab. → The train departs at 6:45 pm.
Inoffizielle Zeit (12-hour clock):
- Used in daily conversations, with words like morgens, nachmittags, abends, nachts to clarify.
- Example: Es ist sechs Uhr abends. → It’s 6 pm.

👉 If someone says “sechs Uhr”, in casual speech it could mean 6 am or 6 pm, so Germans usually add the part of the day.

2. Uhr is always required

In German, you always use the word Uhr when telling official time.

Correct: Es ist zehn Uhr dreißig. (It is 10:30.)
❌ Wrong: Es ist zehn dreißig. (Sounds unnatural in German.)

3. Midnight and Noon

00:00 → Es ist null Uhr. (It is midnight.)
12:00 → Es ist zwölf Uhr. (It is noon.)

👉 Germans do not say “Mitternacht” (midnight) or “Mittag” (midday) for official time, but those words are used in daily speech.

4. Prepositions with Time

um + Uhrzeit = at a certain time
- Der Film beginnt um 20:15 Uhr. → The movie starts at 8:15 pm.
von … bis … = from … to …
- Die Schule ist von 8:00 bis 13:00 Uhr. → School is from 8 am to 1 pm.

5. Big Numbers after 12

13:00 = dreizehn Uhr (1 pm)
14:00 = vierzehn Uhr (2 pm)
15:00 = fünfzehn Uhr (3 pm)
16:00 = sechzehn Uhr (4 pm)
17:00 = siebzehn Uhr (5 pm)
18:00 = achtzehn Uhr (6 pm)
19:00 = neunzehn Uhr (7 pm)
20:00 = zwanzig Uhr (8 pm)
